The best drone photo spots in Vietnam

During my road trip, I had the opportunity to capture some breathtaking landscapes with my drone in Vietnam. The country abounds in incredible spots for aerial photography, from soaring mountains to rice terraces and idyllic beaches.

In this article, I present the best photo spots in Vietnam where my drone has enabled me to immortalize magical scenes, and give you tips on how to take your own exceptional shots.

Ha Long Bay: A Natural Wonder to Capture from the Sky

Ha Long Bay is undoubtedly one of Vietnam's most iconic sites. A UNESCO World Heritage site, its karst formations and islands scattered in emerald-green waters make it a dream spot for drone photographers.

  • Aerial view of the islands: As you fly over the islands, you can capture the craggy ridges emerging from the water, creating a dramatic yet serene scene.

  • Sunset: The golden and orange hues of the setting sun, reflected in the water, make for spectacular photos.

Tip: Try to launch your drone early in the morning or late in the afternoon to capture the soft light and vibrant colors.

When is the best time to photograph Ha Long Bay?

The best time to photograph Ha Long Bay is from September to November, during the dry season. The morning mist and play of light create ideal conditions for drone photography.

Coconut Boat activity in Hoi An

In Hoi An, a charming World Heritage town, you can capture unique photos of coconut boat activity.

  • Aerial view of fishermen: Flying over colorful boats and fishermen in action lets you capture vivid, picturesque scenes.

  • Thu Bon River: The river sparkles under the boats, and the surrounding mangrove forests offer fascinating scenery.

Cat Ba Island: Explore Vietnam's Wilderness

Cat Ba Island, located in Ha Long Bay, offers a striking contrast to the surrounding islands. Covered in lush forests and deserted beaches, it's the perfect place for incredible aerial shots.

  • Secluded beaches: Fly over sandy beaches like Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2, where the sea blends perfectly with the surrounding greenery.

  • Mountain views: The limestone mountain range provides a spectacular backdrop for drone photography.

Ha Giang Loop: Winding Roads in the Mountains

The Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam is a veritable playground for photographers of mountainous landscapes. This tour, which I took with Mama's Homestay on motorcycle, offers breathtaking views of deep valleys and roads winding around towering peaks.

  • Aerial views of the valleys: From the air, you can photograph the way roads twist and dip into verdant valleys, with mountains as a backdrop.

  • Rice terraces: Flying over the rice terraces, you can capture the perfect geometric patterns created by the farmers.

Pro tip: The best times to photograph are at sunrise and sunset, when the colors of the mountains are at their most sublime.

Bai Dinh Temple

The Bai Dinh Temple, located in Ninh Binh, is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Vietnam. This majestic site is ideal for capturing photos of imposing religious structures in an impressive natural setting.

  • Giant statues: From your drone, you can photograph the gigantic Buddha statues and their mountain setting.

  • Pagodas: the traditional roofs of pagodas, set against a backdrop of mountains and forests, make for very interesting compositions.

Anecdote: Flying over the great pagoda, I was able to capture the perfect image where the mist full of mystery contrasts with the green mountains, a photo emblematic of Vietnamese culture.

Hang Mua Peak: A 360° panorama of Ninh Binh

Hang Mua Peak, located in Ninh Binh, is a mountain that offers breathtaking views of the valley below.

Bich Dong - The Jade Pagoda: A hidden gem

The Bich Dong pagoda, located near Tam Coc, is a peaceful spot surrounded by mountains and caves.

  • Mountain views: Fly over the surrounding mountains and pagoda for captivating shots of the traditional architecture and karst landscape.
