Flying Over the Whitsundays: Australia’s Turquoise Gem

Hi, I’m Aubin – an aerial photographer with a passion for breathtaking landscapes that make your heart race. During my road trip across Australia, I experienced one of the most magical moments of my photography journey: a scenic flight over the Whitsundays, a string of paradise islands nestled within the Great Barrier Reef.
And believe me, capturing Whitehaven Beach and the famous Hill Inlet from above was an intense, raw emotion I won’t soon forget.
I booked a flight in a light aircraft to rise above drone altitude limits and fully embrace the magnitude of this natural masterpiece. The goal was simple: to bring back the most stunning aerial photographs of this postcard-perfect setting.
Whitehaven Beach: One of Australia's most beautiful natural gems
Whitehaven Beach is a stretch of powdery white sand bordering hypnotic turquoise waters. It’s regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world – and one glimpse from above makes it easy to see why.
From the plane, the texture of the sand creates fluid curves that merge with the clear water in a surreal watercolor dance. This is what makes aerial photos of the area so spectacular: from above, it reveals a natural work of art invisible from the ground.
Hill Inlet: Where sand meets the sea
At the northern tip of Whitehaven Beach lies Hill Inlet – arguably one of Australia’s most photogenic spots. The interplay between pure silica sand and emerald water forms shifting patterns that change with every tide. As a photographer, it’s a waking dream.
From my window seat, I had my gear ready to capture the perfect moment: soft light, rising tide, clear skies. The timing was ideal. Moments like these are where aerial photography truly shines – it’s not just about “taking a photo”, it’s about preserving a fragile, fleeting instant.
Why choose a plane over a drone?

I usually rely on my trusty DJI Mini 3 Pro for travel photography – lightweight, powerful, and perfect for landscapes. But in the Whitsundays, I quickly realized I needed a new perspective: drone regulations in this region are strict (protected zones, interference risks, altitude limits…).
That’s where the scenic plane flight comes in. Choosing this option allowed me to reach higher altitudes, gain an incredible overview, and most importantly, shoot safely. I could focus entirely on the composition, while a skilled pilot handled the navigation.
Tips for photographing the Whitsundays from the sky
Thinking of doing the same? Here are a few tips from my experience:
Book a morning or late afternoon flight to enjoy soft, angled light
Sit on the right side if flying out from Airlie Beach – the best views are usually there
Use a versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) to switch between wide shots and fine details
Always bring a backup battery – better safe than sorry!
My Fine Art Print of Whitehaven Beach
Among the hundreds of shots I took that day, one stood out immediately. The light was perfect, the sand ripples formed by the tide created an almost unreal composition.
