As an aerial photographer, aerial photography has literally changed the way I see the world. Since integrating the drone into my practice, I've discovered new perspectives and captured scenes impossible to photograph from the ground. But choosing the right drone for photography can be a real headache, with so many options available on the market. So how do you go about it? What criteria are essential for a drone dedicated to photography? Which models should you choose?
I'd like to share with you my experience in the field and some concrete recommendations to help you choose the ideal drone.
Why use a Drone for photography?
A drone offers total freedom in terms of composition and framing. Whether photographing breathtaking landscapes, capturing the immensity of an urban scene, or immortalizing an event from a unique angle, the possibilities are endless.
Personal anecdote: During my road trip to Vietnam, I captured an aerial image of Cat Ba Island at sunrise. A shot I'd never have been able to get without a drone! The golden light on the karst formations and emerald water made for a picture worthy of a postcard.

How to choose a drone for photography
Let's get down to business! I'm going to tell you what I think are the six most important criteria for choosing the right drone for you.
1️⃣ Camera quality: The heart of the Drone
The sensor is the key to sharp, detailed images.
Resolution: A minimum of 20 MP is recommended for optimum image quality.
Sensor size: The larger the sensor, the better the management of light and detail (example: 1 inch on the DJI Air 3).
Video : The ability to shoot in 4K or higher is essential if you want to capture high-definition content.
💡 My advice: For professional shots, go for a minimum 1-inch sensor and RAW image format.
2️⃣ Stabilization: A must for sharp images
A good drone must be equipped with an advanced stabilization system:
3-axis gondola : Essential to compensate for movement and guarantee ultra-stable images.
Electronic image stabilization (EIS): Can be useful, but may result in a slight loss of quality.
Case in point: During an aerial shoot over the Arctic Circle in Norway, the wind was very strong on the cliffs of the Senja Fjord. Thanks to the DJI Mini 3 Pro's stabilization, I was able to capture perfectly sharp images despite the gusts.
3️⃣ Autonomy: More time in the air, less stress
A drone's autonomy generally varies between 20 and 45 minutes.
DJI Mini 4 Pro → 34 min
DJI Air 3 → 46 min
DJI Mavic 3 Pro → 43 min
Tip: Having several batteries is essential to avoid missing a photo opportunity. If you opt for a DJI brand drone, I strongly advise you to buy the Fly More Bundle Kit to have 3 batteries and therefore 3 times more flight time.
4️⃣ Ease of use & flight modes
A good drone should offer intuitive features:
Subject tracking (ActiveTrack): Ideal for capturing moving subjects.
Automatic return (RTH): Allows the drone to return to its starting point in the event of low battery.
Waypoints: Programmable trajectories for repeatable, precise shots.
Tip: If you're just starting out, choose a model with anti-collision sensors to avoid accidents. Please note that the obstacle avoidance system does not work in “Sport” mode.
5️⃣ Range and video transmission
A drone for photography needs to offer a good transmission range:
DJI Mini 4 Pro: 10 km (Ocusync 4)
DJI Air 3: 20 km (Ocusync 4)
DJI Mavic 3 Pro: 15 km (Ocusync 3)
A good signal ensures smooth video return and avoids connection losses. Just be aware that the distances displayed on drone resale sites are tested under ideal conditions, with no obstacles in the vicinity. When you fly your drone, every building, tree or mountain will affect transmission and, consequently, flight range.
6️⃣ Drone regulations & weight
This last point is, in my opinion, one of the six most important criteria for choosing the right drone. If your aim is to develop your business as a professional aerial photographer, offering your services for events such as weddings or working for a tourist office, then I'd advise you to opt for a drone weighing over 250g, which will offer you much better image quality.
On the other hand, if you simply want to capture incredible memories and amaze your loved ones with your aerial shots, while traveling light, then a drone weighing less than 250g will be perfectly suited to your needs.
Less than 250g: exempt from many restrictions, ideal for travel (e.g. DJI Mini 4 Pro). This is the type of drone I use and take with me on my travels.
Over 250g: Requires registration and, in some countries, compulsory training.
